Moroccan ' terror suspect ' detained in Austria

A 25-year-old Moroccan asylum seeker was arrested yesterday in Austria and is being held on suspicion of attempting to commit attacks during the holiday season, reports the Prosecutor in Salzburg today.

The man was arrested yesterday by special units in a small asylum Center in Fuschl, a hilltop town in the Austrian Alps near the German border.

He is suspected of involvement in a terrorist organisation, the Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

The investigation was opened last month on the basis of "information" that was referring to "a suspected terrorist attack in Salzburg over the Christmas and new year period," reports the statement.

The search in the House of the man resulted in the seizure of electronic equipment and "over €8,000" in cash. However, there were no materials found what is likely to be used for an attack, it said.

Austria also announced today a general tightening of security measures for festivals, in the aftermath of the fatal attack on a Christmas market in Berlin yesterday.
