Record number of boat people perished EU

More than 4500 boat people have their attempt to get across the Mediterranean in the EU in 2016 did not survive.

That's a record number, according to the Director of the European Frontex, Fabrice Leggeri, Wednesday in Brussels.

He called it a "sad paradox" that there never before so many ships were actively searching to migrants in boats, while the number of dead was never higher. According to stop smugglers from Libya Leggeri now average 100 160 people at a time in a boat, opposite a few months ago.

Frontex has in 2016 511,371 people registered who illegally tried to enter the EU. That's 72 percent less than in 2015, when there were 1,822,177 registrations. A person who undertakes several attempts is getting registered. Most refugees are Syrian, or claim to be.
