Asscher: no Turkish referendum on death penalty

If the Turkish Government is going to hold a referendum on reintroducing the death penalty, then would not be voted in Netherlands. That finds a resigning Deputy Prime Minister Louis Asscher.

"As far as I am concerned, we also do not allow death penalty referendum in NL," he tweeted Friday. The German Government would not allow such a referendum, said a Government spokesman in Berlin earlier in the day.

The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been said many times before to want to introduce the death penalty as the population that wants. The Turks are in a referendum would then. There is no decision yet taken by Ankara.

A Turkish referendum on a constitutional amendment recently led to a major diplomatic crisis between Turkey and Netherlands. A Turkish Minister who wanted to campaign here, was expelled from the country.
