Cigarette prices set to rise in Morocco

Parliament has approved a bill that the Finance Committee of the House of representatives is presented to raise taxes upon importation of certain cigarette brands. The new law is implemented in the next six months.

The legislation will lead to increased prices of some types of tobacco, especially Brown and blond tobacco, reports Moroccoworldnews.

After a debate in Parliament was the bill approved by the party for Justice and development (PJD) and the rest of the parliamentary groups.

According to the Minister of economy and finance, Mohamed Balhas, the Government has decided to increase taxes on tobacco as a means to combat cigarette smuggling, reported the daily newspaper Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.

The Moroccan customs reported that the proportion of smuggled cigarettes in the Moroccan market 12.7%.

The cigarette price is already risen once in 2016. This started when the Government in 2013 his method to the domestic tax on cigarettes to calculate consumption changed.
