' Ethnic origin more important than criminal record '

A violent delinquent of Dutch origin makes greater chance of invitation application than applicants with a migration background with a clean criminal record.

This is the result of a joint investigation of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), the Dutch study of crime and law enforcement (NSCR), Radboud University Nijmegen (RU) and Utrecht University (UU).

The researchers sent more than 500 fictitious cover letters with resumes, in response to internet jobs. In the letters and resumes were the ethnicity of the letter writer, whether or not having a criminal record and the type of offense that was committed (violent crime, crime against property or public goods or sex offense) systematically varied. For all the other letters were identical.
